The present town of Fasano rose from the Hamlet of S.Maria de Fajano, built in 1088 by the populations who had abandoned the ruins of Gnatia. Gnatia, the frontier Messapian city towards Japigia, became in the Roman period one of the most important step-over in the via Appia -Traiana which reached Brindisi. The populations gradually left the settlements on the coast and, mainly for security reasons, began to settle in the rocky villages and to build hamlets. It's exactly one of them, S. Maria de Fajano, which refers to the present Fasano. In the XIV century it became a fiefdom of the Knights of Malta and on June 2nd 1678 Fasano's inhabitants lived their moment of glory: The Victory over the Turks! They say that the Madonna appeared in the sky to guide the inhabitants' resistance. It was such a memorable victory that it is remembered every year with the Scamiciata, on the occasion of the Feast of the Patron Saints: St. John the Baptist and St. Mary of Pozzo Faceto. Even the cult of the latter Patron Saint is bounded to a legendary tale: they say that some peasants, while they were digging a well, in a little village which is today a hamlet of Pozzo Faceto, where there is the Sanctuary of the same name, miraculously found the picture of the Virgin Mary painted on a stone; from that moment the Madonna of Pozzo Faceto has been venerated and has become one of Fasano's Patron Saint. Today Fasano is a touristic town with an important farming and artisan tradition and an enormous heritage of building and naturalistic beauties which make its territory one of the most beautiful and richest in the Apulia region. To be visited: the historic center, the National Archaeological Park, The rocky settlements are an important example of that particular way of living: the “living in a cave”, which marked the beginning of the XI century. Fasano's countryside, like all the Upper Salento rural areas, are full of ancient Farms; an important characteristic of Fasano's farms is the hypogeum olive press, completely dug into the rock. Until some decades ago many manor farms were still inhabited, today they are in a renovation phase to become Bed-and-breakfast, restaurants and 5 star luxury Hotels. The Zoo-safari Fasanolandia, is the largest fauna park in Italy and one of the largest in Europe and its amusement park. The Thermal Baths of Torre Canne, one of the most equipped complexes, known for more than one hundred years for its therapeutic virtues.
